WINNSBORO, SC – Midlands STEM Charter School is one step closer to moving into its own space. On Wednesday, October 18, the school hosted a groundbreaking at the future site of its new building. School leadership, members of the community, and leadership from MSCS’s authorizer, The Charter Institute at Erskine, joined to celebrate this exciting moment.

MSCS is currently housed in the Rockton Baptist Church. The new facility is bordered by 11th Street, Columbia Road, and US Highway 321 Bypass South. The 46,000-square-foot building will continue to serve grades 4K-12, however, it will have a designated high school. It also will offer science labs, extra spaces for clubs, a gym, an outdoor space for activities, and more.

“We’re ecstatic,” said Cynthia Prince, MSCS executive director and principal. “Since we opened, it has been a dream to have our own building and a place to call home. I’m thrilled that it’s finally happening and that we’re going to have a state-of-the-art facility to serve students in Winnsboro and beyond.”

Midlands STEM Charter School is a 4K-12 public, tuition-free charter school in Winnsboro, SC, whose mission is to produce academically and physically fit STEM-proficient students. MSCS offers students a well-rounded education, pairing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) focused classes with subjects like art, theater, and foreign language. MSCS is authorized by the Charter Institute at Erskine.

“We’re going to be able to expand and give the kids the learning environment they really deserve,” said MSCS Co-Founder and Board Chair, Kevin Thomas. “The expansion is going to give us an opportunity to get to a larger enrollment number and provide school choice for even more families in Fairfield County.”

The new facility will accommodate 351 students. Current students will receive first available enrollment spots, and new student applications are being accepted for the remaining spots. For more information on enrollment, head to MSCS’ website, www.midlandsstem.org
